Welcome to Workword: Speaking the Language of Your Job
Workword helps migrant and foreign workers learn the exact language they need for their job—safely and practically. Discover how audio-first lessons and sector-specific vocabulary bridge the gap between workers and employers.
Welcome to Workword
If you’ve ever started a new job in a country where you don’t speak the language, you know the feeling. You understand the work itself—you’ve done it before—but the words around it are unfamiliar. Safety instructions, tool names, commands from a supervisor, or even how to order a coffee on break. Every day becomes a guessing game.
Workword exists to change that.
We’re not a general language course. We don’t teach you how to ask for directions or talk about the weather. We teach you the language you actually use on the job—the words and phrases that keep you safe, productive, and confident in your workplace.
Who Workword is for
Workword is built for two groups of people.
First, for migrant and foreign workers who are already working—or about to start—in a new country. You might be a welder in the Netherlands, a nurse in Germany, a logistics assistant in Belgium, or a construction worker in France. You need to understand your supervisor, read safety signs, and communicate with colleagues. You need practical language, fast.
Second, for employers and HR teams who hire international staff. You want your new employees to integrate quickly and work safely from day one. You don’t have time to design a language program. You need a tool that gives your team the exact vocabulary for their role—without pulling them off the floor for hours.
What you’ll find inside
Workword focuses on three things:
1. Sector-specific vocabulary
Instead of generic word lists, we cover the language of your trade. Our content includes terms used in welding, hospitality, butchery, construction, healthcare, logistics, and related fields. You’ll learn the names of tools, materials, processes, and common instructions—words you’ll hear and use every day.
2. Safety language first
Safety isn’t a side topic—it’s the foundation. Every sector has its own safety vocabulary, and getting it wrong can have serious consequences. Workword teaches you how to recognise warnings, understand emergency procedures, and communicate hazards clearly. You’ll learn phrases like “stop the machine,” “wear your gloves,” and “this area is slippery.”
3. Short, audio-first lessons
You’re busy. You work shifts. You don’t have time for long grammar exercises. That’s why our lessons are short—five to ten minutes each—and audio-first. You can listen while commuting, during a break, or right before your shift. You hear the word, repeat it, and practice in context. It’s practical learning that fits your day.
Available languages and sectors
Workword currently offers lessons in Dutch, English, German, French, Italian, Spanish, and Portuguese. That means a Spanish-speaking welder can learn Dutch safety terms, or a Polish nurse can learn German patient communication. The content is adapted to each sector and language pair.
We’re constantly expanding our library, but every lesson is built with the same principle: job-specific, real-world language.
How to get started
Getting started with Workword is simple.
- Choose your sector – Pick the industry you work in, like construction or hospitality.
- Select your language – Choose the language you need to learn (e.g., Dutch) and your native language if you want translations.
- Start listening – Open your first lesson and follow along. You’ll learn by hearing, repeating, and using the language in realistic scenarios.
For employers, we offer onboarding packages that can be integrated into your existing training. Your new staff can begin learning before they even arrive, so they show up with a basic understanding of workplace language and safety.
Why Workword works
We’re not here to sell you a magic solution. Learning a language takes effort. But Workword cuts out everything you don’t need and focuses on what matters: the words that keep you safe and help you do your job well. It’s practical, adult-focused, and designed for real workplaces.
Workword is developed by MTech & IT, a team that understands both industry and technology. We’ve built this tool because we’ve seen the gap between what workers need and what traditional courses offer.
